Scooty vs Bike on Rent in Rishikesh: Which Two-Wheeler Should You Pick?

By Hem Tiwari · Published 15 October 2026

Whether you want a gearless scooty or bike on rent in Rishikesh, the choice comes down to where you plan to ride outside town. Inside Rishikesh the Honda Activa 125 does nearly everything. Once the road starts climbing for hours, or you add a pillion, luggage and a long highway stretch, a Royal Enfield starts to earn its higher day rate. Here is how we tell people to decide.

Where the Activa 125 wins

The Honda Activa 125 scooty rental is ₹500 a day, and for most of a Rishikesh stay it is the right tool.

  • Narrow lanes. Tapovan and the Swarg Ashram side are tight, busy and often one-way in practice. A light scooty threads through where a 190 kg motorcycle has to be walked.
  • Parking. Near Triveni Ghat, Ram Jhula and the cafés you can usually find a gap for a scooty that a bigger bike would not fit into.
  • Storage. There is room under the seat for a helmet or a rolled yoga mat, which matters if you are in town for a course.
  • No gears. It is automatic. If you are not used to a clutch, the town's stop-start traffic is far less tiring.

It also copes with more than people expect. The 125cc engine handles Kunjapuri for sunrise, including two-up. If you are a first-timer, our guide on how safe it is to ride a scooty in Rishikesh covers what the roads are actually like.

Where a scooty struggles

  • Long steep climbs with two heavy riders and luggage. Kunjapuri and Neelkanth are fine for light loads. Add two adults and bags, and the scooty works hard on the hairpins and needs patience.
  • Rough or broken stretches. Small wheels and a short travel suspension are not made for potholes and loose surface. Beyond Byasi, road quality varies with the season and landslides.
  • Long highway days. A scooty is comfortable at town speed. After a few hours on the Devprayag or Tehri road, a motorcycle is steadier and less tiring.

When to move up to a Hunter 350 or Classic 350

The Hunter 350 is ₹1,200 a day and the Classic 350 is ₹1,300. Both give you things the scooty cannot:

  • Engine braking. On long downhill sections, a geared bike lets you control speed with the engine rather than riding the brakes all the way down.
  • Bigger wheels and a heavier feel. They hold a line better on the open road, which helps on runs towards Devprayag or Tehri Dam.
  • Comfort for two and luggage. A longer wheelbase and proper seat make a full day in the saddle easier.

The trade-off is town riding. Both are heavier to manoeuvre and park in Tapovan, and you will need a licence that covers geared motorcycles. Our Hunter 350 is the lighter, easier choice of the two. The Classic 350 is the one for relaxed, upright touring.

A simple way to choose

  • Staying in town, cafés, yoga, ghats, Kunjapuri, Neelkanth: Activa 125.
  • Day trips of 100 km or more on the highway, or two riders with luggage: Hunter 350 or Classic 350.
  • Multi-day mountain routes such as Kedarnath or Chopta: see our full fleet and the route pages for the right bike.

Cost matters too. The Activa drops to ₹400 a day for a week. Frequently asked questions

Is a scooty enough for Neelkanth Mahadev?

Yes, for one or two light riders. The road is steep and twisty, so ride slowly and keep the load down. Read our Neelkanth Mahadev guide for the route.

Do I need a different licence for a bike than a scooty?

Yes. A scooty needs a gearless licence, and a geared motorcycle needs a licence for motorcycles with gear. See documents needed to rent a bike.

Which is cheaper for a week in Rishikesh?

The Activa, by a wide margin. It also uses much less fuel.
