Yes — and a large share of our solo travellers, including plenty riding alone for the first time anywhere, do exactly this every week. It isn't reckless, but it does reward a few sensible habits over blind confidence.

What actually makes it safe

Ride in daylight where you can. Rishikesh's streets aren't well lit outside the main market, there are potholes that are genuinely hard to see at night, and cows, pedestrians and other bikes all share the same narrow lanes with no separation.

Park where there are people. Guesthouses, cafés and shopfronts, not empty side streets. Always use the chain lock we provide, even for five minutes.

Ride at walking pace through the market and bridge areas. Laxman Jhula and Ram Jhula in particular get genuinely crowded — pedestrians, porters, cows, shop displays spilling into the road. This is where most low-speed scrapes happen, not on the open road.

Save our number before you set off, and message us your plan if you're going further than around town — Kunjapuri, Neelkanth, one of the waterfalls. Nobody's checking on you, but someone knows roughly where you are.

The licence question

A scooty is a motor vehicle under Indian law and needs a licence — a gearless two-wheeler licence is enough for the Activa. International visitors need a passport and a valid International Driving Permit. See ourfull documents guide for everything required.

Is the Activa powerful enough

Yes, including two-up and including the climb up to Tapovan — we specifically stock the 125cc Activa rather than the 110 for that reason. It's not underpowered for anything you'd want to do on a scooty around Rishikesh.

Where it makes sense to switch to a bigger bike

A scooty is right for getting around Rishikesh, Tapovan, Laxman Jhula and Ram Jhula, and for short rides like Kunjapuri sunrise. It is not the right vehicle for Kedarnath, Chopta or anything into the high mountains — that's a Royal Enfield, for ground clearance and stability on broken road, not just power.
