Documents Needed to Rent a Bike in Rishikesh

This is worth knowing before you arrive, not at the counter — the paperwork is the one part of renting a bike here that we won't flex on, whatever the shop, and it's also the part most likely to derail your first morning in Rishikesh if you turn up without the right document. Here's the complete list, why each piece is required, and how to make the process fast rather than a delay.

Indian nationals

• Original driving licence, valid for the vehicle class you're renting
• One original government photo ID — Aadhaar, Voter ID or Passport — which we hold until the vehicle comes back

Photocopies aren't accepted for either document — we need to see and verify the original at handover. This isn't a Rishikesh-specific quirk; it's standard practice for vehicle rental anywhere in India, and any shop that skips it is taking a risk with your safety as much as theirs.

International visitors

• Passport
• A valid International Driving Permit, endorsed for the vehicle class

The International Driving Permit (IDP) is a legal requirement to ride a motor vehicle in India on a foreign licence — it's issued in your home country, typically by your national automobile association, before you travel, and it isn't something that can be arranged in Rishikesh itself. If you're planning a trip here and don't already hold an IDP, apply for one well before you fly; we cannot rent to you without one, and there's no workaround or exception we can offer at the counter.

The licence class rule

A gearless two-wheeler licence covers the Activa but not a geared motorcycle. Every other vehicle in our fleet is a Royal Enfield and needs a full motorcycle licence class. We check this on every single rental and decline if it doesn't match — not to be difficult, but because it's the single biggest cause of accidents involving rented bikes in Rishikesh. Riding a geared motorcycle on a licence that only covers gearless scooties is both illegal and genuinely dangerous if you've never used a clutch and gears before, particularly on the hairpin roads out of town.

If you're not sure what class your licence covers, check before you arrive — most licences state the vehicle categories explicitly, and it's much easier to sort out an upgrade or a different vehicle choice from home than to discover the mismatch standing at our counter ready to ride.

Age

Minimum 18, no exceptions, for both Indian and international riders.

Deposit

₹3,000 for the Activa, ₹5,000 for any Royal Enfield — fully refundable at return, in cash or by the same method you paid. We also hold one original government photo ID until the vehicle comes back. This is standard practice across Rishikesh and it's non-negotiable, at our shop or anywhere else — treat any operator who skips the ID hold as a red flag rather than a convenience.

Payment

We accept cash or UPI only — no card payments. Worth knowing before you arrive if you're planning to pay by card, since it isn't an option here regardless of the amount.

What we don't need

We don't ask for hotel booking confirmations, return flight details, or a local address beyond where we're delivering the bike to. The paperwork is entirely about the licence and ID — once those are sorted, the rest of the process is genuinely quick.

Common questions

Can I use a digital copy of my licence instead of the physical one? No — we need to see and hold the original government ID, and verify the original licence at handover. A photo sent ahead speeds up the paperwork, but the physical documents still need to be presented in person.
What if I've lost my licence while travelling? Contact your home licensing authority or embassy for guidance on a replacement or temporary document before you arrive — we can't rent a geared motorcycle without a valid original licence to check, no exceptions.
Do you accept a learner's licence? No — a full, valid licence for the vehicle class is required, not a learner's permit.
Can someone else's licence cover a group booking? No — each rider taking out a vehicle needs their own valid licence and ID, checked individually.

Send photos of your licence and ID ahead on WhatsApp, especially if we're delivering to you — a hotel, the railway station, the bus stand, or even Jolly Grant airport. The paperwork gets done before you arrive, and you walk out, sign, and ride, rather than standing at the counter while we verify everything from scratch. This matters most if you're on a tight connection — arriving straight from a train or flight and wanting to start riding the same day.
