Kunjapuri Sunrise Ride: Complete Guide

Published 6 April 2026 ยท Anubhav Travel

If you only have one morning in Rishikesh to spare for a ride, this is the one we point people toward. 35 km, about an hour each way, and one of the best mountain views in Uttarakhand waiting at the top โ€” for the price of a genuinely early alarm.

The route

Rishikesh โ†’ Tapovan โ†’ Narendra Nagar โ†’ Hindolakhal โ†’ Kunjapuri, 35 km of steady climb on decent tarmac, followed by around 300 steps from the parking area up to the temple itself.

Why it's worth losing sleep over

Kunjapuri sits at 1,676 m on an isolated ridge, and on a clear morning the view runs across Swargarohini, Bandarpunch, Chaukhamba and the Gangotri group in sequence, with the Doon and Ganga valleys spread out below on the other side. It's the single best view within an hour of Rishikesh, and because Kunjapuri is a Siddha Peeth rather than a tourist stop, you're mostly sharing the sunrise with pilgrims rather than crowds.

Timing it right

Leave Rishikesh by 4:30 AM in summer, 5:15 AM in winter โ€” check the actual sunrise time for your date the evening before and work backwards from it. Arriving even fifteen minutes late for first light changes the whole ride.

Which bike

Anything in our fleet manages this comfortably. TheActiva 125 handles it fine, including two-up, which makes Kunjapuri the one genuinely spectacular ride available on a โ‚น500 scooty. If you'd rather enjoy the climb itself, a Guerrilla orClassic on those bends at dawn, with almost no traffic, is a genuinely good way to spend a morning.

What to bring

It's cold on that ridge before dawn in any season โ€” take a warmer layer than the temperature in Rishikesh suggests you'll need. The road is quiet at that hour but unlit, and animals do use it, so ride at a pace that lets you stop. Tea stalls near the top open early, which helps.

Best months

October to March, when the air is clearest and the peaks are least likely to be hazed out. It's rideable year-round, but the view is what you're going for, and the view is what suffers most outside that window.
