Laxman Jhula is where most short-stay visitors to Rishikesh base themselves, and a scooty is the sensible way to get around it — small enough for the lanes, easy to park, and cheap enough that you stop thinking about it.

One thing to know first: you can't cross the river on it. The old Laxman Jhula bridge is closed and the new Bajrang Setu is for pedestrians. If you're on this side and want to reach Swarg Ashram or Ram Jhula by scooty, you go around by road. Fine once you know — irritating if you find out at the bridge with a full day planned.

What the scooty does open up is everything upward and outward. Tapovan is five minutes. Neer Garh waterfall is ten. Kunjapuri, Neelkanth and Shivpuri are all comfortable half-day rides.

The market lanes around the bridge are the busiest in Rishikesh — pedestrians, cows, porters, shop displays in the road. Walking pace through those stretches. Once you're clear of the bridge area, the roads are quiet and in good condition.
