Riding to Kunjapuri for Sunrise

35 km, about an hour each way. Leave at 4:30 AM and you'll be on the temple steps for first light.

The route: Rishikesh → Tapovan → Narendra Nagar → Hindolakhal → Kunjapuri (35 km). Steady climb on decent tarmac, then 300-odd steps from the parking to the temple.

Why it's worth the alarm: Kunjapuri sits at 1,676 m on an isolated ridge, and on a clear morning you get Swargarohini, Bandarpunch, Chaukhamba and Gangotri group lit up in sequence, with the Doon and Ganga valleys below on the other side. It's the best view within an hour of Rishikesh and it's a Siddha Peeth, so there's usually a small crowd of pilgrims rather than tourists.

Which bike: anything. The Activa 125 manages it comfortably, including two-up, which makes this the one genuinely spectacular ride you can do on a ₹500 scooty. If you'd rather enjoy the road, the Guerrilla or Classic on those bends at dawn is a good way to spend a morning.

Timing: leave Rishikesh by 4:30 AM in summer, 5:15 in winter. Check sunrise time the night before.

Practical notes: it's cold on that ridge before dawn in any season — take a layer more than you think. The road is empty at that hour but there's no lighting and animals are on it, so ride at a pace that lets you stop. Tea stalls at the top open early. Best October to March, when the air is clearest.
