Rishikesh to Badrinath by Bike: Route Guide

Badrinath is the longest of the four dham rides at 295 km, but it's also the most straightforward in one important way: it's motorable all the way to the temple. No trek, no shuttle jeep, no walking stage. You ride to the door.

The route

Rishikesh → Devprayag (70 km) → Srinagar (105 km) → Rudraprayag (140 km) → Karnaprayag (175 km) → Chamoli (215 km) → Joshimath (255 km) → Badrinath (295 km). Good tarmac to Chamoli, then steep and narrow the rest of the way.

Give it three days

Day 1 to Joshimath or Pipalkoti — 255 km of mountain road is already a long day, and pushing on to Badrinath the same day is a mistake people make once. Day 2, up to Badrinath for the temple, then three kilometres further to Mana village — the last Indian village before Tibet, with Vyas Gufa, Bheem Pul and the Saraswati emerging from the rock. Day 3, back down.

The one-way gate system

This is the thing that actually catches people out on this route, not the distance. In peak season, the Joshimath–Badrinath stretch runs on a timed one-way gate system — traffic is released in batches in each direction, and missing your gate means waiting for the next one. Ask locally about current timings the evening before; they change through the season. Build slack into your schedule and don't plan to ride back down the same afternoon you rode up.

A Himalayan 411 or450 — the Joshimath–Badrinath climb is steep and the surface varies enough that ground clearance matters.

Season
