Best Time for Chardham Yatra

The four dhams open in a fairly narrow window each year, and inside that window there are two genuinely different experiences depending on when you go.

The season, overall

The temples open around late April and close in early November, after Diwali and Bhai Dooj. Outside that window the shrines themselves are shut and the high routes are snowbound — there's no version of this trip in winter.

May to June — the main season

Everything is open, days are long, and rhododendron is in flower on the lower stretches. It's also the busiest window by a wide margin — book yourregistration early, because peak dates fill within hours of the portal opening.

September to October — the connoisseur's window

The monsoon has washed the air clear, the crowds have thinned considerably, and the mountains are visible in a way they rarely are in May. Nights are colder, but this is genuinely the better window for riding and for photography, and it's the one most experienced riders on our tours prefer.

July and August — we don't run it

The monsoon makes this route genuinely dangerous. The Kedarnath and Badrinath valleys in particular are landslide country in the rains, and roads close with little or no warning. This isn't caution for its own sake — it's the same reason the 2013 disaster happened in this exact window.

The honest recommendation

If crowds don't bother you and you want the classic yatra experience, go in May–June. If you'd rather have clearer views and thinner crowds and don't mind the cold, September–October is the better trip. Either way, avoid July–August entirely.
