How to Rent a Bike in Rishikesh Without Checkpoint Fines or Deposit Headaches

By Hem Tiwari · Published 15 October 2026

Two things worry first-time renters more than anything else: being stopped at a checkpost on a rented bike, and losing the deposit over a scratch that was already there. Both are avoidable. At our bike rental in Rishikesh, every one of our 30+ vehicles carries a commercial taxi-series plate and is rented out for self-drive across Uttarakhand. Here is what to check wherever you rent.

The white-plate trap

Some operators rent out ordinary privately registered bikes, which carry a white plate. In Uttarakhand a vehicle rented out for self-drive should be registered for that use, with a commercial plate. If you are stopped on the road to Devprayag, Tehri or Kedarnath on a private-plate rental, you can be fined and the problem becomes yours, not the shop's. Checks are most likely on the main hill roads and at barriers near the start of the climb, so the time you most need your papers in order is when you are far from the shop.

What a legal rental looks like

A rental bike registered for self-drive carries a commercial number plate, black with yellow lettering. Beyond the plate, ask to see the papers that should travel with the vehicle:

  • Commercial registration certificate (RC) for the vehicle.
  • Commercial insurance, valid for the dates you are riding.
  • Pollution under control (PUC) certificate, current.
  • The rent-a-cab or self-drive permit for the vehicle.

A good shop shows you these without being asked. If the answer to any of them is "it's fine, nobody checks", walk away. Our rates and policies page sets out what is included with every rental.

Your side of the paperwork

The other half is yours. You need your own valid licence for the vehicle class, and an ID. Read the original driving licence and ID requirements before you travel, and send photos on WhatsApp ahead of time so handover is quick. Keep the papers with you when you ride.

The handover walk-around that protects your deposit

Deposit arguments nearly always come down to "that scratch was not there before". The fix is simple. Before you leave, walk around the bike with us, point at every mark, and take photos or a short video of each side, the tank, the mirrors and the tyres, while we note them on the sheet. It takes a minute or two.

When the bike comes back undamaged, the deposit is refunded in full: ₹3,000 for the Activa and ₹5,000 for any Royal Enfield. Whichever shop you use, ask three questions first. What is the deposit, how and when is it returned, and what counts as damage?

A short checklist before you ride off

  • Commercial (black and yellow) plate fitted.
  • RC, insurance, PUC and permit seen and in date.
  • Fuel level, brakes, lights and tyres checked.
  • Existing marks photographed with the shop's staff.
  • Deposit amount and refund terms agreed before you pay.
