This is the question we get asked most after "is it safe to ride here." Both tours run the same registration process, the same style of mountain road, and the same standard of support. The real difference is time, and what you do with it.
| Duration | Do Dham: 7 days | Chardham: 12 days |
| Shrines | Kedarnath, Badrinath | Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, Badrinath |
| Distance | ~900 km | ~1,600 km |
| Trekking | 16 km (Kedarnath only) | 16 km (Kedarnath) + 12 km (Yamunotri) |
| Max altitude | 3,583 m | 3,583 m |
Twelve days is a fortnight of leave for most working riders, and for a lot of people that's the actual reason the trip never happens. Do Dham keeps Kedarnath and Badrinath — Shiva and Vishnu, the two dhams that carry the most weight for most pilgrims, and arguably the two best rides of the four — and drops the westward leg to Yamunotri and Gangotri. It's also the tighter ride, day for day: no long transfer days spent just getting between valleys.
If you have the days, Chardham is the complete yatra, done in the traditional west-to-east order. Gangotri in particular — the best riding road of the entire trip, by a distance — isn't on the Do Dham route at all. It's also the fuller experience of the pilgrimage as it's meant to be done, four sources of the Ganga rather than two.
If you have twelve days, do Chardham. It isn't a "better" version of Do Dham, it's a different trip with its own shape, and most riders who've done both prefer the fuller circuit for exactly that reason.
If you have seven, Do Dham is not a compromise. It's the right-sized trip for the time you have, not a smaller version of something else.
Neither needs an Inner Line Permit — both are open to international riders, unlikeAdi Kailash. See ourbest time for Chardham guide for when to book either one, or message us and tell us how many days you actually have — we'll tell you honestly which one fits.
