Best Time to Visit Rishikesh

By Hem Tiwari · Published 3 February 2026 · Updated 10 August 2026

"Best time to visit" depends entirely on what you're actually here for — riding, rafting, a yoga course, or just Rishikesh itself. Here's the honest month-by-month version rather than a single generic answer, since the right month genuinely changes depending on which of those you're prioritising.

March to June

The main season. March and April are pleasant and building toward summer; May and June get genuinely hot in the Rishikesh valley itself, though the mountains above stay comfortable. This is when the Chardham temples open and the Himalayan riding season begins in earnest — see our bike tours for the May–June departure window. It's also peak rafting season, with strong Ganga flow from the spring melt, making this the best window if white-water rafting is your main draw. Expect the town itself to be busy, particularly around the Chardham opening in late April, with accommodation and rafting slots booking out faster than in quieter months.

July and August

Monsoon. Rishikesh itself is lush and dramatically green, but this is not the season for mountain riding — the routes to Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri are landslide country in monsoon, and we don't run tours through it. Rafting also typically pauses during peak monsoon flow, when the river is considered too dangerous for standard rafting operations. If you're here for yoga, an ashram stay, or simply the town itself with fewer crowds, this window has its own appeal — rates are often lower, popular spots are quieter, and the monsoon-green hillsides are genuinely beautiful — just don't plan a Himalayan ride or a rafting trip around it.

September and October

The connoisseur's window, and arguably the best time of year if riding is your priority. The monsoon has washed the air clear, the mountain views are the sharpest they get all year, and the crowds have thinned from the summer peak. This is our second tour departure window and the one most experienced riders prefer, precisely because the combination of clear air and thinner crowds makes for a noticeably better trip than the same route in May. Rafting resumes once water levels stabilise post-monsoon, generally making October a good window for both activities together.

November

The Chardham temples close in early November as winter sets in at altitude. Rishikesh itself remains pleasant and is a good month for the town, ashrams and short rides around the valley, just not for the high routes. This is a genuinely underrated month for visitors whose priority is the town experience rather than the mountains — fewer crowds than peak season, comfortable daytime temperatures, and the market and ghats without the yatra-season intensity.

December to February

Cold, clear, and quiet. The high Himalayan routes are snowbound, but this is exactly the window for a different kind of ride — the winter snow trek to Tungnath via Chopta, one of the few motorcycle-accessible winter experiences in Uttarakhand. It's also wedding season, and Rishikesh sees a steady flow of pre-wedding shoots against the ghats and forest roads. Daytime temperatures in town stay reasonably mild for a Himalayan foothill destination, though mornings and evenings are genuinely cold — worth packing for even if you're only staying in town rather than heading up into the mountains.
